Finally, some yerba from the land where yerba mate was first cultivated by the Guarani Indians -- Paraguay! This kit comes with over one pound (500g) of organic yerba mate. This bold mate is a well aged 'limited edition'.Also included is 6 1/2 inch stainless steel bombilla from Argentina. The bombilla can be unscrewed from the shaft for easy cleaning (note picture). The Brazilian style cup (guampa/mate for you Spanish speakers) might be the finest part. It is hand crafted, about four inches tall. It has a solid base, so it won't tip over easily. Notice in the picture how the top of the cup flares out -- not only is it stylish, but it also makes filling the cup easier and less messy. Its ergonomic design makes it comfortable in your hand.
The cup is made of palo santo, the fragrant wood often used by Paraguayan craftsmen. This sweet smelling wood, related to franckincense, is so pleasant, you might decide you'd rather use it for aromatherapy than drink mate from it! Not only delectable to the nose, it is beautiful to the eye as well. The pictures reveal the exquisite grain of the wood. This cup is heavier and more rugged than the normal mate gourds. This particular cup has a coat of lacquer for protection (but just on the outside of the cup, not on the inside where you put the yerba). With proper curing (instructions included) this cup will serve you well. The thick wood will insulate your mate better than those thin gourds and is suitable for hot mate (mate, chimarrao) or cold terere.
