This item was brought back as a souvenir by Harry Oliver Blum, Headquarters Company, 323rd Light Field Artillery, 32nd Division. Blum was originally with the 323rd, which was formed as part of the 83rd Division, at Camp Sherman, in Chillicothe, Ohio in 1917.
After arriving in France in 1918, the 323rd was attached to the 79th Division in the Argonne in September, and to the 32nd Division when the offensive began. In October they were a part of the 29th Division, operating north of Verdun, on the Meuse River, and in late October they again hooked up with the 32nd, where they remained.
After the armistice, they marched for 29 days, reaching the German border on December 1. Fifteen days later they reached Strassenhaus, Germany, where they occupied the most advanced artillery position in the fallen empire.
The 32nd Division, including the 323rd Light Field Artillery, returned to the USA in May, 1919, aboard the USS von Steuben (ID # 3017), a 23,500-ton troop transport, which was formerly the German passenger liner turned commerce raider Kronprinz Wilhelm.
Kronprinz Wilhelm operated with the Imperial German Navy during the beginning months of World War I, before being interned in the United States in April 1915. She was seized when the United States entered the War, and turned over to the U.S. Navy where she was commissioned as USS Von Steuben in June 1917. Initially envisioned as an auxiliary cruiser, she ultimately became a troop transport.
