WW2 US MARINE IWO JIMA FLAG RAISING POSTER WWIIThe2FunAdGuyz offer a new, high-quality reproduction print of a very famous World War II War Bonds poster featuring the Iwo Jima Flag Raising by five marines and a navy corpsman. CC Beall did the artwork based on the Pulitzer Prize photograph of Joe Rosenthal. The Seventh War Bonds Drive in 1945 was the reason for the production of this boldly colored poster. The United States Treasury ordered the poster and produced 3.5 million copies of it. HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: The raising of the United States Flag by a group of United States Marines on Iwo Jima's Mount Suribachi on February 23, 1945 created one of the most enduring images of World War II. Following over a week of bloody fighting, much of it yard by yard, this critical position was captured and a photograph recorded the event. In reality, this was the second of two flag raisings on that date. Marines with a smaller flag did the first raising. The battalion commander ordered a second flag be found and raised so it could be seen from every part of the island. A large flag was secured and a group, including Rosenthal and a motion picture photographer, made their way to the top of Mt. Suribachi. Four men attached the flag to a Japanese water pipe and attempted to raise it as the first flag was lowered. When the four men had trouble setting the flag, two bystanders joined in to help. Rosenthal was not ready and only caught the shot at the very last second. Rosenthal's film was sent to Guam where its importance was quickly realized. Using radiophotography technology the photo was transmitted to Associated Press headquarters. Less than 18 hours after it was taken, the Associated Press distributed the photograph around the country where it became an immediate icon. U. S. Navy Secretary James Forrestal is quoted: "the flag raising on Iwo Jima means a Marine Corps for the next 500 years." FLAG RAISERS: Remarkably, no one recorded the names of the flag raisers at the time the photograph was shot. After it was published the names were discovered although one, Ira Hayes, had asked not to be identified and another, Harlon Block, was misidentified as Henry "Hank" O. Hansen, who had participated in the first flag raising. Eventually all were identified, although three had been killed in the subsequent battle for Iwo Jima. The are, as they appear from left to right: PFC Ira Hayes, PFC Franklin Sousley (KIA), Sgt. Michael Strank (KIA), Navy Pharmacist Mate Second Class John Bradley, PFC Rene Gagnon and Cpl. Harlon Black (KIA) at the base of the flag. In this view Strank and Gagnon are barely visible. SEVENTH WAR BONDS DRIVE: Upon seeing the image, President Franklin Roosevelt wanted the surviving flag raisers to return to the United States for the Seventh War Bonds Drive. Hayes, Gagnon and Bradley were returned for a tour that was so successful it raised over $23 billion dollars in just six weeks. ARTIST: C. C. Beall (1892-1967) was the artist for this poster.
