On the first day, place them outside in a partly sunny location away from damaging winds for just a few hours. For the most part, your herbs should be planted in areas that receive at least 6 hours of sun a day and are protected from drying winds. Determining how often to water your herbs depends on the season, the plant, air movement, exposure to the sun, and temperature. In general, plants should be watered before they get completely dry, but not so often that the soil stays soggy. Under most conditions and in most areas of America, a deep (soil is wetted 8 below the surface) watering once a week should suffice after the plants are established. The easiest way to accomplish this is by feeding with a weak (1/2-strength) water-soluble fertilizer every two weeks during periods of active growth. During periods of dormancy, do not fertilize at all - the plants are resting and will not benefit from the fertilizer. In fact, it may kill them. Most herbs can successfully grow in containers. Care must be taken, however, to use good quality sterlized potting soil and to select planters with adequate drainage holes, and that they're not left to stand in water for more than a few minutes at a time. Plants confined to pots need more attention paid to their nourishment than garden plants. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------Some plants may arrive looking as if they've just been pruned. They probably have, particularly late in the spring shipping season. These plants are not damaged in fact, pruning encourages lush growth. Broken leaves and bent stems while unsightly are no cause for alarm. Remember that the plants has been thrown on a truck or plane and have been halfway around the country. A healthy plant will have a speedy recover. Please email me within 48 hours if you have problems. Do to shipping regulations, we ship on the dry side. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------Organic Insecticidal SprayThis all-purpose insecticidal soap spray is very effective. Be sure to do a test spray on some hidden leaves first, to make sure your plant is not too sensitive.3 cloves garlic, finely crushed 1 T. vegetable oil3 T. Tabasco or other hot pepper sauce 4 cups water1 t. plain liquid dishwashing soapCombine the crushed garlic, cooking oil and hot sauce and let stand overnight.Strain and add the water. Add the dishwashing soap and stir gently. Pour into a hand sprayer and spray the tops and especially the undersides of the leaves weekly.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Homemade fungicide1 tbsp. baking soda 1 tbsp. vegetable oil 1 tbsp. dishwashing liquid Add these ingredients to a gallon of water and mix well. When you're applying the mixture, make sure you continue to agitate the mixture as you spray so that all these ingredients remain mixed. This homemade fungicide works both a preventive and a control. Even though this mixture has been tested on all kinds of plants--ornamental, vegetables and just about everything--you will still want to take the time to test it on a small leaf surface on the plant that you are trying to control the fungus on.
