This auction is for an early 1900's antique back bar. The back bar was manufactured by the Guarantee Iceless Fountain Speciality Company Grand Haven, Michigan. (Information is provided about this company at the bottom of this description). Check out the photo of the brass badge on the front of the back bar indicating the manufacturer!
This back bar was purchased in the early nineteen hundreds to be used in an ice cream parlor/drug store. It has been in its original drug store location until just recently when I acquired it and put in storage for safe keeping. The drug store did close in the 60's and was reinvented as a hardware store, however, the back bar remained in its original location and had been there ever since its original purchase.
As you can see from the pictures this back bar is in its original, excellent condition. It has never been refinished, therefore, the original finish does remain. The wood appears to be oak with a beautiful dark finish. The base of the back bar is lined with storage shelving hidden by doors. These doors have gorgeuous milky white glass inserts that are unblemised. Also seen from the photos is the original brass hardware. The hardware is original to the back bar and has an excellent aged patina look.
The back bar is decked with a 1 1/4" thick marble countertop that stretches its entire length and is in excellent condition. This marble is striking against the dark finish wood. Connecting to the marble countertop are two columns that flank either side. The columns stretch to the top of the backbar where they are capped with square stained glass. This classic stained glass is carried out across the top of the back bar in a geometric design. This glass is illuminated by three light bulbs that are still in working order. The squares above each column also house a hidden bulb which casts a glow from behind this beautiful colored glass.
The uniqueness of the back bar is apparent by the frosted Coca-Cola decal in the middle of the back bar mirror. The decal reads "Drink Coca-Cola Please Pay When Served". It is not the only advertisement that comes with this auction. As you can see from the photos a DeCoursey's Ice Cream advertisement sign sits atop the back bar. This is actually three signs that are each made of a cardboard material and are not attached to the back bar itself. The signs are copyrighted in the 20's and are pictured as it was set up in the drug store.
We have idenitified only one blemish on the wood where the finish has come off. This is an easy fix with refinishing.
Measurements: 9 ft Tall, 10 ft in Length, and 18 inches in depth.
