I have a VERY CLEAN 1998 Walker mower with a Kubota Diesel engine and 42” GHS deck. I am the second owner of this machine and it has been used residentially for the last 3 years. We’re talking approximately 1.5 to 2 hours a week. The hours on the odometer read 2520. The machine is very clean (both the original owner and I cleaned it after each use). First I’d blow off the machine with a backpack blower and then blow the engine compartment with a compressor.
Here are the POSITIVES for this machine. Almost all new fuel hoses, new main drive belt (never used) extra blades, starter is only 3 years old (that's nothing since it was new when I bought the machine and I only used it once a week), fuel pump is 4 years old, hydros and alternator were replaced by the original owner (can’t remember when they aren't that old), the electrics were updated (fan reverses to keep debris off the radiator). I updated the gas tank so that it doesn’t pull gas through the bottom. It now has the hose that sucks the gas up (to prevent dirt getting sucked in). Plus it makes cleaning the gas tank easier. The battery is only a year old. Three of the gas struts are new. Oscillator works. Safeties work. The fill alarm worked but was disconnected because it got annoying but the electrics for it work. I can't find that little arm thing that will enable it work again but the replacement is about $30 if you want the fill alarm to work again. I also have spare blades. I have a curb hopper/ramp (allows you to drive the machine over a curb. I think I have some other spare stuff but can't remember right now. To make this look like a new machine all you have to do is replace the ripped seat cover and replace the balding tires. The seat cover doesn’t affect performance so I never replaced it and my property is flat so I didn’t replace the tires. Many things were replaced or updated because I had no intentions of ever selling it.
Here’s the bad news. The engine started smoking last year so at the end of the season I figured I would replace the rings. After taking it apart I found the center cylinder was scored and would probably need to be bored out. I never put a micrometer to see if it could just be honed but maybe it could (I doubt it because it was getting blow-by gas). If you want to go that route you will still need one new piston because one rolled off my work bench and cracked. As far as boring it out, the last time I checked (last year) a new oversized piston kit was $660. To have the engine bored out was around $150 (I think I called Haledon Auto). If you do the rest of the labor yourself you can repair the engine for around $850. I also looked into a new engine and they run for about $3000. That's nice because you just drop it in and go. Since this is used residentially and not making me any money I can’t afford to put a new engine in it. I was going to rebuild the engine but haven’t had the time. Oh, and I have the Kubota service manual for this engine which is the D722-E. It has the specs on the engine and everything so if you want to rebuild it you'll have all the specs. I also have parts manuals and some other manuals.
Besides the engine there is one other problem. I noticed when I moved the deck, there was some oil under one of the blades. You’ll need to replace the seal (I think it was like $20 or $30). That's the only things wrong with this machine. The machine ran great just the engine started smoking so I stopped using it. So for $3000 (cost of mower + rebuild) or $5500 (cost of mower + new engine) you can have an almost new machine for less than half the cost of a new machine. New ones normally sells for over $14,000.
I’ll be willing to deliver the machine up to 15 miles for free. I can reassemble everything if you want but won’t put the engine back in it because it will be too heavy to push onto my trailer. I really hate to let this machine go but I don’t have the time to fix it anymore and now is the season to use it. I also have a walk behind as a back up so it's back to that. I will ONLY accept cash on delivery because I’ve gotten burned with checks before. I'll take Paypal but YOU have have to pay any charges they charge me and will have to pay before taking delievery. Any other questions feel free to ask. I also have a few more pictures too. Remember this is being sold as is so ask any questions before you bid. This is a no reserve auction so if you bid, you can win. This item is also for sale locally so I reserve the right to end the auction early. |
