All our the first grade quality tiles are hand picked from the lot so they are free of defects and major inconsistencies. In most cases raw tiles and the printing is done by two different companies where most of output is substandard and sold as hand made, hand crafted or hand painted as substitute for the word "low quality." Handful of factories incorporate all phases into the production process including quality control focusing mostly on the European market because of the higher prices. The pattern is applied by spreading paint with a trowel over perforated film placed on the tile and there are as many films as colors in the pattern. Afterwards the tiles are fired in industrial ovens so the high temperature bakes the paint and makes it shinning. When using substandard raw tiles air bubbles will show up on the surface as small holes in the paint. -- Even though modern Mexican Talavera Tiles are not entirely hand made if all variables impacting the quality are under reasonable control the tiles will appear equally beautiful regardless they were made using traditional or "modern" production techniques.
