What Are the Benefits of a Silk Comforter?
Excellent insulator – has similar warmth retention ability to down
Very lightweight – low weight-to-warmth ratio
Breathable – allow moisture out while keeping warmth in.
Temperature adjusting – because it’s breathable and wicks moisture, silk is warm in winter yet comfortable in summer
Drapes naturally - exceptionally soft and flexible, conforming to your body like a “cocoon” and minimizing cold air pockets
Naturally hypoallergenic - requires no chemicals for processing, naturally resistant to dust mites, mold, and fungus
Renewable resource – a 100% renewable resource that allows you to lower your thermostat, save money, and reduce environmental pollution
Long lasting - silk comforters can last 10 – 20 years with proper careWhat different types of silk are used in silk comforters?
Mulberry silk is created by feeding silk worms an exclusive diet of Mulberry tree leaves, producing a pure white silk fiber, the highest quality of silk available.
Dupioni silk is made from double cocoons nested together - the threads are uneven and irregular.
Tussah silk is from 'wild' silk worms that feed from a variety of plants. It has irregularly sized yarns creating uneven surface. Its color is dark yellow or light brown. The silk worms are allowed to hatch, breaking the long strands of silk. How does silk compare to down? Both down and silk are excellent insulators, and extremely lightweight, though down has the advantage when it comes to providing maximum warmth. Down undergoes thorough cleaning to remove dust and dirt, while silk is naturally hypoallergenic, undergoing minimum processing. Both materials are very light weight. While down has the best weight to warmth ration, silk is very supple and conforms nicely to your body in a comfortable “cocoon.”How do I care for a silk comforter?Use a removable duvet cover as much as possible. If you always use one, your silk comforter may never need to be cleaned. If it does need cleaning, take it to a dry cleaner. Hand or machine washing will cause damage. Sun Curing, or placing the comforter in partial sun for 1 – 2 hours, is a traditional way to “clean” a comforter. To store, put in a breathable bag or duvet cover in a dark, cool, dry place to protect it from insects and moisture.
